An environmental consultant specialising in the study of algae in freshwaters and the practical use of biological information in environmental decision-making.  Based near Durham, Martyn co-ordinates the UK and Ireland quality assurance “ring test” for diatoms and works with PBA on diffuse pollution projects.

Aquatic Science

Senior lecturer at University College London, Carl is an aquatic ecologist with specialist expertise in the study and identification of aquatic macrophytes, diatoms and fishes and has a particular interest in lake, pond and river restoration. Carl is course convener MSc Aquatic Science at UCL, from which PBA has hosted project students.

Wetland Ecology

A skilled ecologist with over 20 years’ experience in a wide variety of survey, monitoring and investigative techniques.  Phil is a specialist in plant ecology, with considerable project management skills and extensive field experience and has worked with PBA on a range of projects.

Aquatic Invertebrates

A freshwater entomologist with outstanding field and identification skills, competent in the identification to species of both aquatic and terrestrial macroinvertebrates.   Sharon is experienced in a wide range of field sampling techniques at a range of habitats and works with PBA’s Freshwater Laboratory.

Bats

John has 20 years’ experience in bat conservation.  He is well versed in the procedures of European Protected Species licensing, successfully applying for licences, devising and supervising mitigation works.  John works with PBA on projects where bat mitigation works are involved.

Simon specialises in the fields of hydrology, flood risk and water resources.  Areas of work for Thomas Mackay Ltd. include river modelling (low and high flows), flood risk assessment & management, hydrological analysis, water resource modelling & planning, sustainable development, river restoration and habitat surveys.

 

Jon Payne 

Jonathan Payne

Freshwater Fish

Jon was jointly hosted by PBA and FSC for his MSc dissertation in Aquatic Science at the University College London.  Specialising in freshwater fish, Jon’s MSc project focused on investigating population dynamics in brown trout and perch at Malham Tarn (Craven Limestone Complex SAC).  Jon has now taken up a position at the EA National Fisheries Laboratory.

Terrestrial Invertebrates

A specialist in invertebrate survey, assessment of invertebrate interest and habitat management for invertebrates, including ecological impact assessment and the development of practicable mitigation measures, the writing of management plans, and the preparation of interpretive material.

Ornithology

A highly experienced ornithological consultant with a thorough knowledge of the birds and habitats of Yorkshire and the Peak District.  Jim works with PBA to carry out bird surveys.

Plant Taxonomy

An expert botanist and teacher, Judith works with PBA on projects requiring vegetation surveys and also trains our staff to increase their knowledge and plant identification skills.

Freshwater Biology

Emeritus Reader at Kings College London and Honorary Research Fellow of the Freshwater Biological Association, Allan is a freshwater biologist with a particular interest in the distribution and ecology of lower plants (algae, bryophytes, lichens) and the environmental chemistry of phosphorus. Allan’s other area of expertise is experimental design, and the collection, analysis and interpretation of biological data.

Archaeological Sciences

Operations manager with ArcHeritage, David is experienced in all aspects of heritage related planning consultancy, environmental impact assessment, Scheduled Monument Consent, and archaeological fieldwork design and project management.  ArcHeritage collaborate with PBA on projects that include archaeological sciences.

Instrumentation and Control Systems Specialist

An expert in developing automated monitoring and control systems, Total Automated Solutions worked with PBA to develop an Intelligent River Monitoring System (iRMS) to continuously monitor river water quality both upstream and downstream of in-channel works.

Environmental Lawyer

A specialist in natural environment law, Penny advises a wide range of clients on protected species, protected habitats, water and environmental impact assessment issues in the context of planning applications, applications for environmental consents, regulatory / enforcement action and public law challenges.  Penny is a partner in the Planning and Environment Group of Freeth Cartwright LLP.

A talented creative designer and owner of RootFiftyTwo.  Kimberley works with PBA on projects that require a design input, such as the design of educational materials and designs our logo & brand.

Gail Armstrong

Has been involved in  bat work since 1994 and is a Natural England roost visitor and trainer, carrying out a range of licensed bat work.  A former trustee of the Bat Conservation Trust, Gail surveys for the National Bat Monitoring Programme (NBMP) leads many bat walks and also cares for grounded and abandoned bats.  Gail has a wide experience of bats, runs a range of training courses, and carries out licensed surveys and conservation works for a range of development projects.
